Happy New Year! How many of you have fitness or weight-loss goals for 2013? I certainly do! I WILL get back to my pre-pregnancy weight. I WILL rebuild my strength. I WILL run a half marathon in 2013. I WILL be Fit In Heels again!Even though these are all 2013 resolutions, I challenge you to make a January resolution, too. Then, make a new one for February, March, etc.
It is proven that small, realistic goals are MUCH more attainable than larger goals. Having a long-term goal is still great (for example, I WILL run a 1:50 half marathon this May), but include smaller short-term goals to help you with your long-term (for example, I WILL run three times a week, including a speed, long, and tempo run each week beginning in February).
Also, instead of saying, "I'd like to lose 5 pounds", say "I WILL lose 5 pounds". It becomes your personal mantra. Write it down. Remind yourself.
One great reason to make short-term goals is that you can reward yourself more often! :) Get yourself a magazine subscription, a new workout outfit, running shoes, workout song, protein powder, or a bubble bath- anything to pamper yourself without it being related to food (my suggestion).
I am serious about the half marathon in May. I say this, however, 4 weeks out of having my first baby and unsure of how my body will react to resuming physical exercise, especially running, in a few weeks. I won't lie, it's been really hard not to exercise. It's a regular part of my life and it feels weird to not include it.
| It also feels weird to not take embarrassing photos of mysel- wait, I still do that. |
| The way I was. Sigh. |
Childbirth is an amazing thing. It not only showed me just how strong women really are, but it also forced me to really slow down and give my body time to recover! I can't remember the last time I've taken almost 3 months off of running (including the last 6 weeks of pregnancy when I didn't run), and I think it's great. I'm getting excited to run again, getting my playlist ready, and I'm excited to rebuild my endurance. I know it will be hard, and I need to give myself a break when I'm not running my usual 5 minute kilometre right away!
So: my January resolutions are as follows:
1. I WILL be good to my body, and not force exercise until I am ready.
2. I WILL lose 5 pounds by the end of the month.
What is your JANUARY resolution??

You will get it back :) There might be some interruptions that happen (happens all the time with my girls) but you've got your heart in it and it will all come back to you.
ReplyDeleteYou'll be a milf in no time my friend :)
ReplyDeleteYou'll be back in no time!!! I know it is really hard to wait and not push like you are used to but injury is no fun! I had a hard time waiting too after both my girls were born. The first I went back too hard too soon and paid the price! I love how you break the year up into months...makes it more specific!
ReplyDeleteComing back to running after your first baby isn't the hardest thing - the hard thing is taking it easy enough to not get injured and cutting yourself some slack so you don't get discouraged. I made some huge mistakes after the birth of my twins that led to some huge injuries (femoral stress fracture anyone?) Just keep thanking your body for growing a sweet cozy home that carried your baby to term, and for nourishing and snuggling your baby like no one else can. You'll be back to PRs and bathing suits in no time. :)
ReplyDeleteLove love love this post! I already know I will be on the same wavelength as you now when I have my baby in June. Small goals adding up to a larger one is the way to go! That half is yours and regardless of your time, you should be proud! :)
ReplyDeletefunny enough I too would like to lose 5lbs by the end of the month.... unfortunately mine isn't baby weight it is what i like to call engagement weight....ie. the 5lbs i gained after dan proposed cause all i did was eat and drink non stop lol
ReplyDeleteI am also hoping to run another half this year, I was thinking the ottawa half at the end of may, or i might wait until the fall, i think dan is going to train with me!
ps. you look friggen amazing!
Yes! Not only am I pumped about your positive energy, but I'm pumped that I think I'm responding ON your blog! Your goals are amazing :) I love the "I WILL" instead of "I would like to". I WILL lose 7-8 lbs in January. I WILL lose another 7-8lbs in February. This is because I WILL be in a bikini in March and I WILL have to look at myself lying on a lounge chair like a beached whale. I WILL make at least 3 eat-clean recipes a week in January and I WILL do Zumba 3 times a week in January, among other things.
ReplyDeleteWoohoo! It almost feels like I've already done it, just by saying it!

Oh and I love the reward yourself but not with food - awesome :)
