About Me

My Photo
I am a teacher, fitness/yoga instructor, runner, celebrity stalker, chocolate lover, embarrassing dancer, wine guzzler, can't-live-without-my-girlfriends kind of girl. I also have a collection of high heels that strongly outweighs my collection of runners. My goal is to find balance in my life through health and exercise- and when I say balance, I mean kicking ass in the gym and enjoying food, wine, family, friends, and basking in celebrity news. I hope you can help me in my journey and I hope that you, too can find balance!

How I Didn't Gain 10 Pounds On Vacation!

... I only gained 5.

But here's how!

1. I kept myself busy by reading a lot of academic journals, and sharing them with my nephew and my Dad.

Why, WHY do I like things meant for tweens?

Good read, bud.
My Dad got in on some of my reading. He also found a photo of me, printed as an ad for Cotton against my will.
2. I only drank wine that had my name on it.

Okay. My name isn't on this. But this was during a strenuous paddleboat workout, so it evens out.
3. I made sure I ate my fruit.

Fruit Salad from Cottage Country. Can't get much more local than that.
4. I hired a personal chef.

So... what's everyone else having?

My dream meal. Pesto salmon, apple walnut salad, and quinoa salad. RIDIC.
5. I did some more Stand Up Paddleboarding.

Shit.

Great photo, Carter.

Show off.
  5. We went golfing, which kept me occupied. With the views.

Nice form.
But seriously, I actually did golf.

The boys trying to find where the hell my ball went.
7. We actually worked out every day. To be continued in another post!

8. I took photos instead of stuffing my face. Um... at least until I put the camera down.

A. MEN.

It was so fun to be away with my fam for the week! We are all the exact same, so we didn't have to try to be polite by not shoving our mouths full of treats for the week. We have a "work hard, play hard" mentality. We all love to be active, and to that, we all love to eat- and we save it for special occasions like cottages, birthdays, Christmas, Thanksgiving, Easter, Yom Kippur, Hanukkah, other people's birthdays, graduations, a regular Wednesday, only pressing the snooze button three times... I digress.

We planned out our meals for the week which helped with food portions, and got so excited about some of our theme nights:

Sunday- Kraft Dinner (Yes, this WAS really exciting for my sister and I)
Monday- Homemade Turkey Chili (slow cooked by yours truly with all local vegetables)
Tuesday- BBQ (burgers, hot dogs, fruit salad- the real kind)
Wednesday- Fiesta! (fajitas with homemade guacamole, fresh veggies, salsa, jalapenos, hot sauce and greek yogurt substituted for sour cream)
Thursday- Salmon (barbecued with some ridic salads)
Friday- Pizza (flatbreads with gourmet toppings- lots of veggies, pesto, parmesan cheese, etc.)

Now, you'd think I would have taken photos of these meals as I planned on sharing them with you all.

That would involve me not stuffing my face. I did manage to take one- the photo above of the salmon and salads. Delicious Ridiculousness. Yeah, I said it. Even though it was a week that felt like total luxury, we ate some amazing healthy food and were very active as a family. It was such a great week that we are anxious to book a year in advance so that we get them in our calendars for next year!

1. Family vacations: Friend, or Foe?
Friend. Though... let's face it, we all need some alone time sometimes. Hence my academic literature choices for the week.

2. When you're going away, do you plan out your meals? Even if it's checking out the menu at the restaurant you'll be eating at?
This depends for me. If it's one night out or a weekend, definitely yes. In fact I get a little anxious not knowing because I'm a bit of a freak when it comes to planning meals/snacks. If it's for a longer period of time, say a week away, I allow myself to go with the flow.

Don't forget to enter my TITIKA SPORTS BRA GIVEAWAY!!! Ends this FRIDAY!!!

I'm not a planner, so we dot usually plan meals out or anything. Sometimes we don't even plan out where we are going- one summer in college my husband and I went to the airport not knowing where we'd go and ended up catching a standby flight to Australia!

YOU MAKE ME DIE! I want some sour fruit salad!!! I hope you saved me some! That week of meal planning sounds unreal. I love Kraft dinner and Fiesta nights. My fave for sure.

Love family vacations but don't take enough with my own fam. We do cottaging with Dean's fam every now and then and I love it.

I'm a freak when it comes to planning. If I'm going out to a restaurant I will check the menu well in advance and decide what I want before I get there. If I go on vacation I look up restaurants that are in the vicinity to make sure I don't go and end up eating garbage. I also bring a bag of oatmeal with me so I don't have to go out to eat for breakfast! I don't typically like the food served at restaurants for breakfast. I'm not a bacon, eggs, sausage, etc kind of girl and usually their "healthy" options suck.

Cottages are different though. Absolutely no planning. My diet consists of chips, chocolate, candy, and ice cream.

I love the titles and pictures!! My family always has stuff out and open. The hardest part is to avoid picking. It looks like you had a blast. I want to try stand up paddle boarding!

You are hilarious. If you family wanted to adopt me for family vacations, that would be great, thanks.

I'm such a planner. I always look at the restaurant menu online before I go, and often pack my own food/snacks just in case.

I used to HATE family vacations as a teen, but now I love them. Need to have one soon, I am missing then big time!
:)

You're hilarious! And I have read the first two Lauren Conrad books. I can't help it- they are just too good!!

I love family vacations! Our last one was to Disney World. It was a trip of adults in the happiest place in the world. Amazing. I definitely needed some alone time floating in the pool though. And of course reading trashy magazines haha

In general day to day I am a planning geek. I love being organised. But when it comes to food- I pick a food that I'm craving and test out a yummy new recipe!

And Stand Up Paddleboarding looks so fun! My friend just did it on the beaches in Toronto and I was so jealous. It's on my 'to do' list!

I just adore you!

I love fam vacations. . . and will be taking one in 3 shorts weeks... YESSS!

I always check menus ahead of time mainly because all I ever want to do it eat so I love knowing what's in store for me! I work out ever day on vacation too... it makes the fact that I will then send the next 15 hours of the day in a horizontal position on a lawn chair that much more justifiable! ;-)

This is exactly what we do when we go to the lake house in Maine - we plan yummy meals but healthy ones, and we go for runs, we swim (ok, I float around but that still counts right??), we play dominoes. We drink wine. But only really good wine. Also very important if you ask me. And ps. I need you to send me that quinoa salad recipe!!!

I love the menu for the week and the priceless captions for the pictures made me laugh. Vacations are great and so are holidays. We can run the entire rest of the year to make up for it!

I find it so challenging to "be good" when I am hanging out with the fam. I always tend to stuff my face. Your vacay sounds super fun and I'm really jealous because I am in desperate need of a vacation!! This post cracked me up. P.S. When you sit, you don't even have a tiny roll on your stomach!? Are you super human or something??? I want that. :)

Looks like you had a great vacation. Anytime by the water is my idea of a good time!

I do ok with my family on vacations. Until about day 3 or 4. Then I am ready to pull my hair out. :)

Bahaha I think I'm actually in love with you! Hilarious!! One of my favourite things to do (ever) is eat and drink copious amounts of wine! Literally 3 course meals 3 times a day is the way forward, sign me up for that! Thankyouverymuch! :) Came back from NYC and London a good few kilos heavier but like you said work hard and play hard! The best way to be! :) Family vacays, friend now, but they never went so well when I was younger. Saying I was uncontrollable is probably an understatement :/ My poor, poor parents! lol! I am NEVER having kids!! Haha

I can totally relate to this, except we go to the cottage every weekend. My sis and I decided to plan our meals and snacks and NOT have junk in the house because we can all pound back a bag of smart food if its there you know what I mean? We also decided to do some bit of exercise so we either walk, kayak, and if we can ditch the kids with the men we go for a bike ride around the lake. We were really getting tired of going to the cottage and feeling like crap from stuffing our face and the only exercise we would get would be walking to/from fridge. We still have a blast we just feel better doing it. Easier when everyone is on the same page. oh and by the way... I love your blog!

Great post! I never plan out my meals. You didn't really do bad so I can see why you didn't gain. I am going on a family vacation next week. I hope its as awesome as yours was.

This looks like a seriously wonderful holiday. And kudos to you for planning your meals before you left- I've never tried it myself, but I'm sure it would help to avoid the holiday weight gain :) It's nice that you left yourself room for error, though, like the "fruit" ;)

Sounds like you had a wonderful time! I'm definitely all for the academic journals when I'm away...I mean InStyle (obviously a study of current theory of design), OK (social commentary)....
I enjoy going on family vacations, my Mum, sister and I went to Melbourne earlier this year for a girl's week and had a great time!
Also, planning meals for me is more about making sure that I get to taste everything I possibly can in each new place!

I just went on a family vacation and had so much fun! But you do definitely need a little breather here and there! As for food, I try, though usually just go for the good stuff at night and try to eat healthy the first meal or two of the day!
